Hardap Dam (Namibia)

Weather…

The Hardap Dam is the largest dam and reservoir in Namibia, located near the town of Mariental in the Hardap Region. Completed in 1963, the dam impounds the Fish River, creating a vast water body covering approximately 25 square kilometers. Its primary function is to provide water for the surrounding arid region and to support extensive irrigation schemes that produce fruits, vegetables, and livestock fodder. Beyond its economic role, the reservoir is a significant recreational area and a haven for numerous bird species, including Great White Pelicans and flamingos. The surrounding Hardap Game Reserve is home to various wildlife such as zebras, antelopes, and ostriches. The dam also plays a critical role in flood control for Mariental, although extreme weather events have challenged its capacity in the past. The presence of such a large water mass in a dry savanna landscape makes it a vital ecological oasis.
