Ponta do Sol is the northernmost town on Santo Antão Island, famous for its easy on the eye setting on a narrow promontory jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. The settlement was once a significant commercial port, evidence of which remains in the old, brightly colored town hall and the small fishing pier. A unique feature of Ponta do Sol is the defunct Agostinho Neto Airport, located on a reclaimed level strip right by the sea; it was permanently closed in 2003 due to dangerous crosswinds. The town's architecture is a mix of appealing colonial-era residences and simple fisherman cottages. The climate is often windy due to its exposed location, yet it gives spectacular sunsets that gave the town its name (Sun Point). Ponta do Sol has evolved into a primary tourism hub on the island, hosting numerous guesthouses and restaurants specializing in fresh seafood. It also serves as the trailhead for the renowned coastal hike to Fontainhas, often cited as one of the most scenic trails globally.
