Taung Kwe Pagoda (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Taung Kwe Pagoda, also known as Thiri-Mingala Hill, is the iconic landmark of Loikaw in Kayah State and one of the most unusual temple complexes in Myanmar. It is built upon a bizarre formation of limestone rocks that rise sharply from the plain, with individual outcrops connected by bridges and staircases. Each of the eight rocky peaks is topped with a distinct golden stupa, giving the site a fairytale appearance, especially when illuminated at night. The pagoda has been continuously expanded throughout the 20th century, though local legends about guardian spirits inhabiting the rocks date back much further. From the summit, visitors are treated to an unparalleled 360-degree view of Loikaw, the surrounding mountains, and the vast rice paddies of the state. Geographically, it marks the spiritual center of the region and is a place of deep religious devotion for the diverse ethnic groups of Kayah State. While climbing the steep stairs is seen as an act of devotion, modern elevators have been installed to assist elderly pilgrims. Its unique architecture, perfectly adapted to the rugged natural terrain, makes Taung Kwe one of the most visually remarkable sites in the country.
