Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Bago Region and covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometers. Originally constructed in 1878 as a storage reservoir to supply water to the Sittaung-Bago canal, it gradually transformed into a rich wetland ecosystem over the following century. In 1988, it was officially designated as a wildlife sanctuary, and in 2004, it became Myanmar's first site to be recognized under the Ramsar Convention. The sanctuary is home to over 125 species of birds, making it a vital stopover for migratory species traveling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. During the peak migratory season from November to March, the area hosts thousands of birds, including rare species like the Baer's Pochard. Beyond its ecological value, the wetland provides essential ecosystem services such as flood control and water resources for local agriculture and fisheries.
