Hsipaw
Hsipaw is a welcoming town positioned in the northern Shan hills and is widely regarded as one of Myanmar's premier trekking destinations. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills, rice paddies, and scenic villages inhabited by ethnic groups such as the Shan and Palaung. Hikers can embark on multi-day treks, staying in simple village homestays and experiencing the heartwarming hospitality of the local people. The scenery is wide-open and has a deep dive into traditional rural Myanmar life. In the town itself, the 'Shan Palace' is, where you can learn about the fascinating and sometimes tragic history of the last Sawbwas (traditional rulers). Another highlight is the daily morning market, where vendors from the surrounding hills come to sell their fresh produce and crafts. For a more relaxed pace, consider a boat trip on the Dokthawaddy River or a walk to nearby waterfalls. The local Shan cuisine is a highlight, with the famous Shan noodles and a variety of fermented vegetables being local favorites. The most spectacular way to reach Hsipaw is by train from Pyin Oo Lwin, crossing the famous Goteik Viaduct, once one of the highest railway trestles in the world. Alternatively, bus services run regularly from Mandalay. The best time to visit is from November to February, when the weather is dry and cool. The hot season from March to May sees nature in bloom, while the monsoon from June to October can make trails muddy but turns the hills into a lush, animated green paradise.
