Aythaya Vineyard (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Aythaya Vineyard is Myanmar's first commercial winery, founded in 1999 by German entrepreneur Bert Morsbach. Located near Taunggyi in Shan State at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, it enjoys a temperate climate suitable for viticulture. The project began with the importation of thousands of vines from Europe to test local soil compatibility with varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. After extensive trials, the first wines were released to the market in 2004, marking a significant milestone in the country's agricultural history. The vineyard covers several hectares of limestone-rich hillsides, which provide a distinct mineral character to the grapes. It has since become a major tourist attraction, offering educational tours regarding the winemaking process and the challenges of tropical viticulture. The estate continues to innovate by producing late-harvest dessert wines and grappa, solidifying its reputation as a pioneer in the regional wine industry.
