Originally established as a Phoenician trading post, the settlement of Sala Colonia later became a flourishing Roman city. In the 14th century, the Marinid dynasty transformed the site into a royal necropolis, enclosing it with formidable defensive walls and monumental gates. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the Roman forum and baths alongside the ornate tombs of Marinid sultans and the ruins of an ancient mosque. The site is famous for its lush gardens and the numerous white storks that nest atop the ruins, creating a unique and tranquil atmosphere. Despite suffering damage during the 1755 earthquake, Chellah remains one of Morocco's most photogenic historical monuments.
