Nador Lagoon (Morocco)

Weather…

The Nador Lagoon, locally known as Marchica, is one of the largest lagoons in the Mediterranean basin, situated on the northeastern coast of Morocco. Covering an area of approximately 115 square kilometers, it is separated from the open sea by a 25-kilometer-long sandy spit. Geomorphologically, the lagoon is a shallow basin with an average depth of only 4 to 7 meters, shaped by long-term marine and aeolian processes. The city of Nador sits directly on its western shore and has historically relied on the lagoon for fishing and regional trade. In recent years, the "Marchica Med" redevelopment project was launched to ecologically restore the lagoon and transform it into a premier destination for sustainable tourism and water sports. The lagoon hosts a rich biodiversity, including seagrass meadows and numerous bird species like flamingos and herons that overwinter there. Economically, the region is highly significant due to the nearby Beni Ensar port and its proximity to the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Restoration efforts have drastically improved water quality, making the lagoon a flagship project for Moroccan environmental conservation.
