Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania is renowned as the Cradle of Mankind and stands as one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites. Located within the Great Rift Valley, this 48-kilometer long and 90-meter deep canyon has yielded critical evidence regarding human evolution. The site achieved international fame through the lifelong work of Mary and Louis Leakey, who discovered the Zinjanthropus (Paranthropus boisei) skull here in 1959. The gorge's exposed sedimentary layers preserve fossils and stone tools spanning a period of over two million years. These findings document the evolutionary transition from early hominids to Homo habilis and Homo erectus. Today, the site features a modern museum that contextualizes these extraordinary finds within the geological history of the Serengeti Plains.
