Berkane is located in northeastern Morocco near the Algerian border and is widely regarded as the citrus capital of the country. Officially founded in the early 20th century, the city experienced rapid growth under the French protectorate as a primary agro-industrial center. It is named after the local patron saint, Sidi Ahmed Aberkane, whose shrine remains a significant religious site in the area. Geographically, Berkane benefits from its location in the fertile plains at the foot of the Beni-Snassen Mountains and its proximity to the Moulouya River, providing convenient conditions for orange and clementine cultivation. The region accounts for nearly half of Morocco's citrus exports, making agriculture the backbone of the local economy. Beyond farming, Berkane is famous for Reggada music, a traditional genre rooted in the ancient war dances of local tribes. Its nearness to the Mediterranean coast and the beach resort of Saïdia adds a tourism dimension to its modern industrial profile.
