Mrtvica Canyon (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Mrtvica Canyon is a hidden natural gem in central Montenegro, carved by the Mrtvica River before it joins the Morača. Reaching depths of up to 1,100 meters, it is one of the region's most spectacular gorges, though less famous than the Tara Canyon. The approximately 8-kilometer section of the canyon is defined by sheer cliffs, crystal-clear water, and dense vegetation. Notable cultural highlights include Danilo's Bridge, built in 1858 by Prince Danilo, and the Gate of Wishes, a natural rock formation. A spectacular path blasted into the rock face during the Yugoslav era allows hikers to access the deepest parts of the gorge. The pristine environment is home to rare plant species and provides a cool sanctuary from the summer heat.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This wild river valley is typically accessed from a designated starting point near the village of Međuriječje, not far from Kolašin. The trail follows the course of the river, taking you deep into the heart of the dramatic gorge.
📅
Best season
Late spring and early summer are spectacular times to visit when the river is full of rushing, crystal-clear water from melting snow. Autumn is also beautiful, but the canyon can be damp and slippery, requiring extra care on the paths.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The hiking trail is famous for sections that have been dramatically carved directly into the sheer, steep cliff faces. The path is generally well-defined but features rocky uneven ground, narrow ledges, and some minor elevation changes.
🎒
What to bring
Reliable footwear with excellent traction is mandatory due to the occasionally slippery and uneven rock surfaces along the cliff faces. A light jacket is useful as the deep canyon remains cool and shaded even on hot summer days.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors usually leave their vehicles at the informal parking areas near the bridge where the Mrtvica river meets the Morača river. From there, the adventure continues entirely on foot as you hike upstream into the narrower parts of the canyon.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme caution is required when navigating the narrow trail sections carved into the steep cliff faces, particularly if the rock is wet. It is important to stay on the path and keep a safe distance from the turbulent river below.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive hike exploring the most impressive sections of the canyon and returning to the start takes about four to six hours. The route is linear, allowing visitors to walk as far up the gorge as they wish before turning back.
