Ölgii is the capital of Bayan-Ölgii Province in western Mongolia, the country's only Kazakh-majority region. The town stands at 1,710 metres above sea level in the Altai Mountains on the Khovd River and has been a provincial capital since 1940. About 30,000 people live here, of whom roughly 90 percent are Kazakhs, making Ölgii the cultural focus for the some 100,000 ethnic Kazakhs in Mongolia. The population is predominantly Sunni Muslim, and one of the largest mosques in the country dominates the central square. Ölgii is world-famous for the centuries-old tradition of eagle hunting, known as berkutchi, in which trained golden eagles are flown at foxes, marmots and even wolves. The annual Eagle Festival in October draws thousands of visitors. Summer also brings a Kazakh version of the traditional Naadam games. Nearby Tavan Bogd National Park contains Khüiten Peak (4,374 m), Mongolia's highest mountain, located at the tripoint with Russia and China.
