Ruins of Gaochang (China)

Weather…

The Ruins of Gaochang are located approximately 46 kilometers southeast of Turpan in Xinjiang Province, marking the site of a once-bustling oasis city on the ancient Silk Road. Established in the 1st century BC as a military garrison during the Han Dynasty, Gaochang grew into a vital commercial hub and served as the capital for several entities, including the Gaochang Kingdom and the West Uyghur Kingdom. The city was a renowned melting pot of cultures and faiths, acting as a major center for Buddhism, Manichaeism, and Nestorian Christianity. Spanning roughly two square kilometers, the site features a clear tripartite layout consisting of an outer city, an inner city, and a palace complex. The structures, primarily built from rammed earth and adobe bricks, have been remarkably preserved by the extreme aridity of the surrounding desert. Following centuries of prosperity, the city was destroyed and eventually abandoned in the 14th century during wars among Mongol khanates. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it remains a testament to the complex geopolitical and religious history of Central Asia.
