Malchin Peak

Malchin Peak, or Malchin Orgil, is one of the five prominent peaks of the Tavan Bogd massif in the Altai Mountains, located on the border between western Mongolia and Russia. Standing at 4,050 meters, it is unique among the Tavan Bogd summits as it is typically snow-free and does not require technical glacial climbing skills to reach. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic schists and granite, with its slopes dominated by loose rock and scree fields. The summit features an unparalleled vantage point overlooking the Potanin Glacier, the longest in Mongolia, and the vast expanses of the Russian Altai. The peak is a central feature of the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a region recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its natural beauty and ancient rock carvings. Due to its accessibility, it is a popular target for trekkers aiming to cross the 4,000-meter threshold. However, the weather remains notoriously unpredictable, with sudden blizzards and high winds common even in mid-summer. Its name translates to 'Herder's Peak,' honoring the local nomadic traditions of the Altai region.
