Khüiten Peak
Khüiten Peak is the highest mountain in Mongolia, standing at 4,374 meters above sea level, and is part of the Tavan Bogd massif in the Mongolian Altai. It is situated precisely on the border between Mongolia and China, very close to the tripoint where both countries meet Russia. The name 'Khüiten' means 'cold' in Mongolian, reflecting the extreme climatic conditions and the permanent glaciation of its slopes. The peak is the focal point of one of the largest centers of mountain glaciation in Central Asia, with the Potanin Glacier originating directly from its base. Geologically, the mountain is composed primarily of crystalline schists and granites formed during Paleozoic orogenic processes. For mountaineers, Khüiten presents a significant challenge due to its extreme remoteness and the technical demands of glacier navigation. The region is protected within the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, famous for its pristine wilderness and local Kazakh nomadic culture. The first successful ascent was recorded in 1963 by Mongolian climbers.
