Orhei is one of Moldova's oldest and most culturally significant cities, situated on the Răut River about 45 kilometers north of Chișinău. Its roots trace back to the medieval period, with the original settlement (now known as Old Orhei) located 15 kilometers downstream before the town moved to its present location in the 16th century. The city's architectural centerpiece is the St. Demetrius Cathedral, built by Prince Vasile Lupu between 1631 and 1636, which stands as a masterwork of Moldovan ecclesiastical design. Today, Orhei is an animated industrial and economic center, particularly famous for its juice and food processing industries. In recent years, it has gained national attention for extensive urban renovation projects and the creation of Orheiland, a massive modern amusement park. This blend of rich historical heritage and aggressive modernization has made Orhei a key regional destination, attracting both history enthusiasts and families from across the country.
