Cave of Surprises (Moldova)

Weather…

The Cave of Surprises (Peștera Surprizelor) is the second-longest cave system in Moldova, located in the Criuleni District along the scenic banks of the Dniester River. Discovered in 1970 by a group of speleologists, this underground labyrinth is carved into Tortonian limestone and stretches for approximately 1,700 meters. The cave features a complex multi-level structure with vertical shafts, narrow fissures, and large chambers such as the Cinema Room and the Great Hall. Its formation began roughly 13 million years ago due to tectonic shifts and the erosive action of groundwater on the limestone plateau. Inside, the environment is characterized by a constant temperature of 12-14°C and high humidity levels throughout the year. Because it remains in its natural state without artificial lighting or walkways, exploring the cave requires specialized gear and experienced guides, making it a premier destination for adventurous cavers and geological researchers.
