Kouroukan Fouga (Mali)

Weather…

Kouroukan Fouga is a historical site near Kangaba, celebrated as the birthplace of the Mali Empire's constitution. Following his decisive victory at the Battle of Kirina in 1235, Sundiata Keïta convened an assembly of the allied Mandinka clan chiefs at this location. During this gathering, the Charter of Manden was proclaimed, making it one of the oldest constitutions in the world, though it was primarily transmitted through oral tradition. The charter established social rules, human rights, and prohibited the ill-treatment of slaves and forced marriages. The name "Kouroukan Fouga" translates to "clearing on the hard rock," describing the physical geography of the site. Today, it stands as a significant symbol of democratic traditions and early legal frameworks in West Africa. The oral tradition of the Manden Charter was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
