Koulikoro is the capital of the region of the same name in Mali and a major industrial and logistical hub on the banks of the Niger River. Located about 60 kilometers downstream from Bamako, the city serves as the terminus of the historic Dakar-Niger railway, making it a crucial transshipment point for cargo between Senegal and the Malian hinterland. Economically, Koulikoro is renowned for its oil and soap industry, with the HUICOMA factory playing a central role in local employment. The port of Koulikoro is a vital starting point for river navigation toward Timbuktu and Gao during the high-water season between August and November. Historically, the area was the site of the famous Battle of Kirina in 1235, which led to the founding of the Mali Empire. Today, the city is also home to a significant military academy (EMIA), which trains officers for the Malian armed forces. The landscape around Koulikoro is defined by prominent hills and the majestic Niger River, which dictates the social and economic rhythms of the community.
