The Banamba Hills are a series of erosion-resistant landforms located in the Koulikoro region of Mali, approximately 70 kilometers north of Bamako. These hills define the landscape of the Belédougou cultural area and reach average elevations of around 350 meters. Historically, the Banamba region is famous for the 1915-1916 anti-colonial revolt against French forced labor and conscription, which remains a key event in Malian resistance history. The terrain is composed of sandstone and lateritic rock, providing a rugged backdrop to the fertile valleys used for millet and sorghum cultivation. The hills serve as a natural watershed for the surrounding plains, influencing local microclimates and agricultural cycles. Geologically, the formations are remnants of a larger plateau that has been dissected by centuries of surface runoff and wind erosion. The town of Banamba at the base of the hills is a significant center for commerce and traditional Islamic scholarship. Today, the hills are an important landmark for regional identity and a focus for sustainable land management in the transition zone between the sudano-sahelian savannas.
