Fort of Médine (Mali)

Weather…

The Fort of Médine, located near Kayes, was established in 1855 by French colonial forces under General Louis Faidherbe. It was designed as a strategic outpost on the Senegal River to secure French interests and halt the eastward expansion of El Hadj Umar Tall's empire. The fort gained historical fame during the siege of 1857, when a small French garrison withstood the attacks of Umar Tall's army for over 100 days until reinforcements arrived. The facility features thick stone walls, soldier quarters, and an ammunition depot, parts of which are still standing today. Médine was also a significant trading center and the terminus of West Africa's first railway line. Today, the fort is a national monument of Mali, serving as a reminder of the colonial struggle and the military history of the region. Visitors can tour the on-site museum, which documents the events of the siege and the broader colonial history of the area.
