Ankarafantsika Bird Watching (Madagascar)

Weather…

Ankarafantsika National Park in northwestern Madagascar is one of the last major refuges for dense, dry deciduous forests on the island. Geographically, the park spans 1,350 square kilometers and is characterized by the scenic Lake Ravelobe and deep sandstone canyons. It is considered a true paradise for ornithologists, as 129 bird species have been documented here, about 75 percent of which are endemic. Among its rarest inhabitants is the Madagascar fish eagle, one of the most endangered birds of prey in the world. Historically, the area was placed under protection as early as 1927 and later declared a national park to preserve its unique flora and fauna from deforestation. In addition to its birdlife, the park is home to eight lemur species, including the tiny golden-brown mouse lemur. The vegetation consists of resilient tree species adapted to the long dry season. The combination of aquatic ecosystems at the lake and terrestrial forest areas provides extraordinary biodiversity that attracts scientists from around the world.
