Wirtgen Castle in Diekirch is a historic building that looks back on a long and varied history. The origins of the castle can be traced back to the 10th century, when a medieval castle stood on this site. Over the centuries, the building has been destroyed, rebuilt and altered several times. The castle acquired its present appearance mainly in the 19th century. In 1842, the politician and industrialist François-Julien Vannerus acquired the property and had it converted into an elegant neoclassical residence. It later came into the possession of the Wirtgen family, who gave it its present name. Since 1955, the castle has been owned by the town of Diekirch and today houses the municipal music school. It is an important cultural meeting place in the town and an example of how historic buildings can be preserved and brought to life through a new use.
