Bourscheid Castle (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Bourscheid Castle is the largest castle complex by surface area in Luxembourg, perched on a prominent rocky outcrop 150 meters above the Sûre River. The core castle was established as early as the 11th century, although archaeological evidence suggests an even older human presence at the site. In the 14th century, the fortress was significantly strengthened with an outer wall featuring eight towers to meet increasing military demands. Its strategic location provided excellent control over river traffic on the Sûre and the surrounding valleys. Following the extinction of the Lords of Bourscheid in the 16th century, the castle changed hands multiple times and eventually fell into ruin. In 1972, the Luxembourgish state acquired the site and began extensive conservation and partial reconstruction work. Today, visitors can explore the impressive outer curtain walls, the gatehouse, and the ruins of the palace. The evening illumination makes the castle a visible landmark across the Ardennes region. A small on-site museum documents the excavations and the fortress's complex architectural history.
