Žeimena Plain (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Žeimena Plain in eastern Lithuania is a classic glacial outwash plain, formed by gigantic torrents of meltwater at the end of the last ice age. The rivers flowing from the retreating ice sheet spread massive quantities of sand and fine gravel across this area, creating an extremely flat and even relief. Today, the highly porous, nutrient-poor sandy soil is almost entirely covered by dense pine forests, forming a major part of the famous Labanoras Forest. The absolute highlight of the plain is the eponymous Žeimena River, which meanders picturesquely through the woodlands with its crystal-clear, cool waters. Due to the highly sandy nature of the soil, rainwater percolates very rapidly, which historically prevented the development of large-scale agricultural operations. The pristine natural environment is instead a true paradise for canoeists, hikers, and nature lovers seeking the deep silence of eastern Lithuania's forests.
