💡 Tips

  • The Great Thuja of Kintai, Europe's second tallest thuja tree, is hidden behind the local forestry office, not in the main square.
  • Winds from the Curonian Lagoon can be quite strong and sudden, so always carry a light windbreaker even in summer.
  • Ferries to the Curonian Spit do not depart from Kintai; you will need to travel to nearby Dreverna, Šilutė, or Klaipėda for boat crossings.
  • The waterfront here is an excellent, less-crowded spot for watching kite surfers or trying it out yourself.

The shores of the Curonian Lagoon offer a serene environment as the sun dips below the horizon over the distant Spit.

Kintai is a tranquil settlement on the eastern shore of the Curonian Lagoon, deeply connected to the fishing traditions of the Nemunas Delta. The village is widely known for its exceptional smoked fish, particularly sea bream and smelt, prepared using centuries-old local recipes. A major natural attraction is the 'Great Thuja' of Kintai, a giant arborvitae tree standing over 18 meters tall, officially recognized as the second tallest thuja in all of Europe. Culturally, Kintai is the town of Vydūnas, a famous Lithuanian philosopher and writer who lived and taught here in the late 19th century. The former village school now houses the Vydūnas Cultural Center, providing insights into the history of Lithuania Minor and the life of this prominent figure. From the Kintai pier, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the lagoon to the massive sand dunes of the Curonian Spit on the horizon. The village maintains an authentic, slow-paced atmosphere, far from the typical tourist crowds. The surrounding area is a birdwatcher's paradise, as it lies directly under the East Atlantic flyway. Hiking trails along the lagoon shores and through the nearby pine forests offer plenty of opportunities to spot rare avian species. Local fishmongers and smokehouses offer the catch of the day, making it a culinary destination as well. The best time to visit is from May to September, or in March during the traditional smelt season. Kintai is an excellent stop on the way to the nearby Ventė Cape ornithological station.
