Varėna is the undisputed center of the southern Dzūkija region, set within the vast, dense pine forests of Lithuania. The city began to develop in the mid-19th century around the newly built railway station on the Saint Petersburg, Warsaw line. Nationwide, Varėna enjoys the reputation of being the “Mushroom Capital” of Lithuania; every autumn, the famous Mushroom Festival (Grybų šventė) attracts thousands of nature lovers and foragers to the region. In addition to its natural abundance of berries and mushrooms, the town holds great cultural significance: the most famous Lithuanian composer and painter, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, was born in the neighboring Old Varėna (Senoji Varėna). Today, this small town of 8,000 residents gives pure tranquility and nature.
