Stelmužė Oak (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Stelmužė Oak is a living natural monument and believed to be the oldest tree in Lithuania, and perhaps all of Northern Europe. With an estimated age of up to 2,000 years, this majestic tree has silently witnessed countless historical epochs, from Baltic paganism through to the modern era. In pre-Christian times, the pedunculate oak served as an important sanctuary for local tribes, where sacrifices were offered to ancient gods like Perkūnas. Its massive trunk, measuring approximately 13 meters in circumference at the base, stands as a testament to immense resilience. Standing right next to the oak is a historic wooden church, built in 1650 without the use of a single iron nail, making the site a deeply unique spiritual and cultural ensemble.
