Obeliai is a town in the Rokiškis district of northeastern Lithuania, situated near the Latvian border. Its history was first documented in 1509, when the Obeliai estate was mentioned in the records of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A major turning point in the town's economic life was the founding of the local distillery in 1907, an establishment that remains a significant part of the area's industrial landscape. The monument to the June Uprising of 1941 stands as a memorial to the complex events of World War II and the local quest for national sovereignty. The town's architectural centerpiece is the Neo-Gothic Church of St. Anne, constructed between 1859 and 1868, noted for its intricate craftsmanship and historical value. Obeliai also features a regional history museum that meticulously documents the traditional crafts and peasant lifestyle of the Aukštaitija region. Its location on the shores of Lake Obeliai provided favorable conditions for early settlement and continues to offer a scenic environment for the community. Today, Obeliai is recognized for its agricultural contributions and its dedication to maintaining its rich historical legacy.
