Rokiškis Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

The St. Matthias Church in Rokiškis is considered one of the most significant Neo-Gothic architectural ensembles in Lithuania, shaping the cityscape since the late 19th century. Construction took place between 1877 and 1883 under the patronage of the Tyzenhauz family, following designs by the architect Georg Werner. Particularly striking is the 60-meter-high tower, which is visible from afar across the Aukštaitija region. The church interior houses valuable works of art, including a magnificent altar from Gerard Goffin's workshop in Belgium and an organ dating back to 1883. The crypt serves as the final resting place for members of the Tyzenhauz noble family, who significantly promoted the town's development. The architecture harmoniously integrates red brick elements and finely crafted stone details, perfectly representing the Neo-Gothic style of the period. Today, the building is a protected cultural monument and a central venue for sacred music concerts and religious celebrations in northeastern Lithuania.
