Radviliškis Battlefield (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Radviliškis Battlefield is a site of paramount importance in the Lithuanian Wars of Independence following World War I. In November 1919, the newly formed but highly motivated Lithuanian armed forces clashed here with the so-called Bermondt-Avalov Army, a well-equipped force consisting of Russian monarchists and German Freikorps volunteers. In fierce, bitter fighting around the vital Radviliškis railway junction, the Lithuanians successfully broke through enemy lines and secured a glorious victory. This decisive triumph permanently ended the threat posed by the Bermondt Army in the Baltic region and was a crucial step in securing the young Lithuanian Republic. Today, imposing monuments at this historic site, including a symbolic windmill and evocative sculptures, solemnly commemorate the immense courage and sacrifice of the independence fighters.
