The Paneriai Memorial, located in the forest near Vilnius, is a site of profound sorrow and remembrance dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. Originally, Soviet authorities had excavated massive pits here in the 1940s to install aviation fuel tanks. Following the German invasion in 1941, the SS repurposed these unfinished pits into mass execution sites. Between 1941 and 1944, up to 100,000 people were brutally murdered in this bleak forest, including approximately 70,000 Jewish residents of Vilnius, Lithuanian intellectuals, Polish resistance fighters, and Soviet prisoners of war. Today, quiet forest paths connect various memorial stones and monuments erected by Jewish, Polish, and Lithuanian communities, while a small on-site museum thoroughly documents the site's tragic history.

Visiting
The Paneriai Memorial is an open-air site located in the forest, freely accessible to all visitors without an entrance ticket. You can walk along the path that traces the route of the victims and observe the markers of the mass graves.
Typical hours
The site is typically open daily during daylight hours, as it is an outdoor memorial. No fixed opening times exist; visitors enter at their own responsibility.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the entire site, including memorials and commemorative stones. Please remain respectful and avoid taking selfies directly at the graves.
Time needed
Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours to walk the paths and thoroughly read the information boards. A longer stay is worthwhile if you also visit the small museum on site.

Combine your visit with a trip to Vilnius, as Paneriai is only 10 km southwest of the city centre. Many guided tours include both the Memorial and the Vilnius Ghetto sites.
Getting there
Take bus no. 2 or 16 from Vilnius bus station to the stop 'Paneriai'. Alternatively, a short taxi ride from the city costs about 15-20 euros.

Wear sturdy shoes, as the forest paths can be muddy after rain. Bring a bottle of water because there are no food outlets near the memorial.
