Joniškis is a historically rich city in the far north of Lithuania, located just a few kilometers from the border with Latvia. Since its founding in 1523 by the Bishop of Vilnius, the city has evolved into one of the most vital centers for Lithuanian agriculture, surrounded by expansive, fertile fields. The absolute architectural and cultural highlight of Joniškis is its unique, lovingly restored 19th-century synagogue complex, consisting of a “White” and a “Red” synagogue, which bears witness to the once-significant Jewish community.
