Middle Lithuanian Lowland (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Middle Lithuanian Lowland is an extensive, remarkably flat, and open plain that cuts directly through the center of the country from north to south. It owes its geological origin to the bed of a massive prehistoric proglacial lake formed by the meltwater of the retreating ice age glaciers. Today, this expansive lowland is the undisputed agricultural heartland of Lithuania, as the fine sediments from the former lake left behind an extremely fertile, loamy, and humus-rich soil layer. The flat relief perfectly accommodates intensive, large-scale farming, enabling the region to produce massive yields of grain, sugar beets, and various other crops. Compared to other Lithuanian regions, forests are relatively scarce here, typically confined to small, damp patches. The plain is gently intersected by the broad, slow-moving currents of the Nevėžis and Dubysa rivers.
