Alytus Mound (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Alytus Mound (Alytaus piliakalnis) is a significant archaeological and historical monument located on the right bank of the Nemunas River. It bears witness to the early settlement of the region and served as a vital defensive point in the 14th century against attacks by the Teutonic Knights. The wooden castle that once stood on the summit was part of a strategic defensive system of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The hill is approximately 25 meters high and gives a wide view of the surrounding Nemunas valley, highlighting its military importance. In 1377, the fortress was burned down during an attack by the Crusaders, after which its active use as a defensive structure ended. Archaeological excavations have unearthed finds from various periods, including weapon fragments and everyday objects of the Baltic tribes. Today, the hill is a popular destination for hikers and a symbol of the founding history of the city of Alytus. The surrounding landscape is protected as cultural heritage and serves as a site for local festivals and historical commemorative events.
