Tlokoeng Wetlands (Lesotho)

Weather…

The Tlokoeng Wetlands near Mokhotlong are an ecological treasure in Lesotho's high-altitude regions. These alpine peatlands and marshes play a critical role in the country's hydrological system, acting as a massive natural sponge that stores rainwater and releases it slowly into rivers throughout the year. This function is vital for regulating water levels in the Senqu River basin. The flora is characterized by specialized marsh grasses and mosses adapted to the extreme conditions at altitudes exceeding 3,000 meters. Faunistically, the wetlands provide essential habitat for endemic frog species of the Maloti Mountains and serve as an important stopover for various migratory birds. Despite their ecological significance, these wetlands are severely threatened by overgrazing from livestock and the resulting soil erosion. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this sensitive ecosystem, which is fundamental not only for biodiversity but also for the water security of the entire Southern African region.
