Byblos (Jbeil) is located on the Mediterranean coast, 37 kilometers north of Beirut, and is recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Human settlement in the area dates back to the Neolithic period around 5000 BC, later evolving into a major Phoenician port tightly linked with Egyptian trade. The Greeks named papyrus (byblos) after the city, and the word Bible is derived from this name. The sarcophagus of King Ahiram, which bears one of the earliest known inscriptions of the Phoenician alphabet, was discovered here. The archaeological site reveals distinct historical layers, featuring remnants of Phoenician temples, a Roman theater, and a 12th-century Crusader castle. The medieval old town, with its narrow streets, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the ancient harbor, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Today, it remains a bustling cultural and tourist hub.
