Mount Meron (Israel)

Weather…

Mount Meron in northern Israel, standing at 1,208 meters above sea level, is the highest peak within Israel's pre-1967 borders. It is the centerpiece of the Mount Meron Nature Reserve, known for its dense Mediterranean forests of evergreen oaks and strawberry trees. The mountain holds immense religious significance, as its slopes house the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the traditional author of the Zohar. Every year during the Lag BaOmer holiday, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit the site to celebrate with large bonfires. Geologically, the mountain is composed of limestone and provides panoramic views from its summit stretching across Upper Galilee to Lebanon and the Golan Heights. Numerous hiking trails, such as the famous Meron Summit Trail, make the region a favorite for nature enthusiasts. Due to its elevation, Mount Meron is one of the few places in Israel that regularly experiences snowfall during winter. Its ecological diversity features rare plant species and a wealth of wildlife, including wild boars and various birds of prey that thrive in the protected woodlands.
