The Pogragja Castle, also known as Kalaja e Pogragjës, is a significant archaeological site located near the village of Pogragja, approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Gjilan. The fortress was strategically built on a steep hill on the right bank of the Binačka Morava River and dates back to Late Antiquity, likely constructed during the reign of Justinian I in the 6th century. It served to monitor vital trade routes and provide defense against northern incursions. Archaeological investigations have uncovered remains of fortification walls, towers, and residential structures indicating multi-phase usage extending into the Middle Ages. The castle is notable for its inaccessible location, which offered natural defense and today provides hikers with spectacular views over the Pogragja Gorge. The walls were constructed using local rubble stone bonded with lime mortar, typical of the military engineering of that era. Despite its ruinous state, the fortress is considered one of the most valuable examples of early Byzantine military architecture in eastern Kosovo. Recently, efforts have been increased to improve access to the site and protect it as a key element of regional cultural heritage.
