Prohor Pčinjski Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

The Prohor Pčinjski Monastery is located in the southernmost part of Serbia, positioned on the forested slopes of Mount Kozjak near the border with North Macedonia. It was founded in the 11th century, specifically between 1067 and 1071, by the Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in honor of Saint Prohor, a local hermit who practiced asceticism in nearby caves. Throughout the centuries, the monastery underwent numerous destructions and renovations, with major expansions carried out by the Serbian King Milutin in the early 14th century. The monastic complex consists of several churches, residential quarters, and an old watermill, representing a blend of medieval Byzantine and Serbian sacred architecture. Beyond its religious significance, the site played a crucial role in modern political history as the venue for the first session of ASNOM in 1944, which laid the foundations for the Republic of Macedonia. Today, Prohor Pčinjski stands as a major spiritual center of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a protected cultural monument, attracting many pilgrims and tourists to the scenic valley of the Pčinja River.
