Matejče Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Matejče Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, is a significant 14th-century religious and cultural monument located near the village of Matejče. The current church was built over the remains of an older basilica, with its completion largely attributed to the Serbian Empress Jelena and her son, Tsar Uroš V, between 1355 and 1360. Its architecture follows the classical Byzantine cross-in-square style and features five distinct domes. The interior is renowned for its extensive fresco cycles, which depict biblical scenes, hagiographies of saints, and portraits of the founding family in high artistic quality. Despite suffering severe damage during various conflicts, most recently in 2001, the monastery remains a symbol of Macedonian-Orthodox tradition and Serbian medieval architectural history. Situated on the slopes of the Skopska Crna Gora mountains, it provides a commanding view over the Kumanovo plain.
