Crn Vrv (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Crn Vrv, meaning 'Black Peak', is a prominent summit in the Shar Mountains (Sar Planina) range in northwestern North Macedonia. Rising to 2,585 meters, the peak provides commanding views over the border ridges shared with Kosovo and down into the sprawling Polog Valley. Its name derives from the dark appearance of the crystalline schists that form its upper structure, contrasting with the lighter limestone of neighboring massifs. The surrounding high-altitude meadows are a historic center for pastoralism, famous for the brave Sarplaninac shepherd dogs that protect flocks of sheep from predators. Crn Vrv is closely associated with the Popova Sapka ski resort, making it a prime destination for winter sports enthusiasts and backcountry skiers. The mountain's ecosystem is incredibly rich, featuring several glacial lakes known as 'mountain eyes' and forests of endemic Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce). As a vital part of the recently established Shar Mountains National Park, the peak is a sanctuary for the critically endangered Balkan lynx and other large mammals. Hikers find Crn Vrv to be a rewarding challenge, offering some of the purest alpine air and most dramatic scenery in the entire Balkan Peninsula.
