Church of Saint George - Staro Nagoričane (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Church of Saint George in Staro Nagoričane is one of the most outstanding examples of Byzantine sacral architecture in the Balkans. It was commissioned by the Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin between 1313 and 1318, built upon the foundations of an older 11th-century church. The exterior facade features the alternating layers of stone and brick characteristic of the Palaeologan style of that era. Inside, the church houses one of the best-preserved fresco cycles in the Byzantine world, created by the renowned masters Michael Astrapas and Eutychios. The murals depict detailed scenes of the Passion of Christ, the life of Saint George, and portraits of the royal donors. Of particular note is the realistic depiction of facial features and the dynamic composition of the figures, signaling the arrival of the late Byzantine Renaissance. Due to its historical and artistic significance, the church is under state protection and attracts art historians from across the globe.
