Kokino Megalithic Observatory (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Kokino is a major Bronze Age megalithic observatory discovered in 2001 on the summit of the Tatićev Kamen mountain in northern North Macedonia. Archaeological studies date the site to approximately 1800 BC and confirm its function as a precise instrument for observing astronomical cycles. In 2005, NASA ranked Kokino as the fourth oldest observatory in the world, following Stonehenge, Abu Simbel, and Angkor Wat. The site consists of several stone markers and thrones carved into natural volcanic rock, arranged to mark the rising and setting points of the Sun and Moon during solstices and equinoxes. Beyond its astronomical use, Kokino likely served as a ritual site for agricultural festivals and religious ceremonies. Located on a volcanic lava dome at an altitude of over 1000 meters, the site provides excellent visibility and remains one of the most intriguing prehistoric sites in Southeastern Europe.
