Tsavo Plains (Kenya)

Weather…

The Tsavo Plains form one of the most extensive and historically significant landscapes in East Africa, located in southeastern Kenya between Nairobi and Mombasa. These semi-arid plains stretch over thousands of square kilometers and are characterized by their distinctive red soil, volcanic hill ranges, and vast thornbush savannahs. The territory is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the railway line and highway connecting Nairobi with the coast. Geologically, the plains are part of the Precambrian basement complex, overlain in many areas by young volcanic rocks such as the Yatta Plateau, which is the world's longest lava flow. The region gained worldwide fame in the late 19th century due to the 'Man-eaters of Tsavo', two lions that terrorized workers during the construction of the Uganda Railway. Today, the plains host one of Kenya's largest elephant populations, often referred to as 'red elephants' because they dust themselves with the iron-rich soil. The Galana and Tsavo Rivers are the primary lifelines for the diverse flora and fauna of this wild and untamed region.
