Tsavo Forest (Kenya)

Weather…

The Tsavo Forest is an integral part of the vast Tsavo National Park ecosystem, divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, which together form one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The vegetation varies dramatically across the region, from open savannahs and semi-arid plains in the east to more mountainous and forested terrain in the west. Riparian forests along the Tsavo and Galana Rivers are particularly significant, providing a vital lifeline for wildlife. Established in 1948, the park gained historical notoriety due to the 'Man-eaters of Tsavo', two lions that attacked railway workers during the construction of the Uganda Railway in 1898. Today, Tsavo is famous for its large herds of 'red elephants,' which acquire their unique hue by dusting themselves with the area's iron-rich soil. Other notable features include Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water filters through volcanic rocks into pools inhabited by hippos and crocodiles. The volcanic landscape, marked by the Shetani lava flow, highlights the region's recent geological activity.
