💡 Tips
- In summer, arrive early (before 10 AM) as car access to the most popular lagoons becomes restricted once parking lots fill up.
- Rent a kayak or a paddleboat to explore the lagoons. It allows you to access quieter swimming spots.
- The Laguna del Rey is one of the most accessible for swimming, but it's rewarding to walk to the more distant lagoons like Laguna Colgada.
- Bring water shoes. The shores can be rocky and the bottom of the lagoons is uneven.
- The Cueva de Montesinos, a cave featured in Don Quixote, can only be visited on a guided tour, which should be booked in advance.
🍽 Food
Enjoy this local vegetable stew at one of the restaurants overlooking the lagoons, often served with a fried egg on top.
Try this classic dish of scrambled eggs with sausage, mentioned in Don Quixote, at a traditional inn ('venta') in the surrounding villages.
Several restaurants along the main lagoons specialize in fresh trout ('trucha') and other freshwater fish.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for local honey, wine, and Manchego cheese at the visitor centres or in the shops in Ossa de Montiel.
You can find small workshops selling leather goods and pottery in the villages surrounding the park.
Hike to the upper lagoons (e.g., Laguna Conceja), which are less crowded and provide a quiet setting for birdwatching.
A short drive from the main park, this castle provides panoramic views of the reservoir and is often less busy than the lagoons themselves.
Although the main waterfall is popular, the trails leading away from it offer quiet spots by the water.

Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park is a unique hydro-geological site stretching across 25 kilometers in the upper Guadiana Valley. It comprises 15 interconnected lagoons separated by natural travertine dams, creating a series of cascading waterfalls. This 'Oasis of La Mancha' provides a stark contrast to the surrounding dry plains. During the summer months, the lagoons are a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The park also holds literary significance as the setting for the Cave of Montesinos, a key location in the adventures of Don Quixote. Numerous hiking trails lead to viewpoints like the Mirador de la Laguna del Rey, offering panoramic vistas of the turquoise waters. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including otters and a wide variety of migratory birds. Ruidera village serves as the main entry point with services and restaurants. Visiting in spring ensures the waterfalls are at their peak, while early autumn has cooler temperatures for hiking.
