Battlefield of Las Navas de Tolosa (Spain)

Weather…

The battlefield of Las Navas de Tolosa in the foothills of the Sierra Morena is the historic site where the fate of the Iberian Peninsula changed forever on July 16, 1212. Faced with the threatening expansion of the North African Almohad Empire, the Christian kings of Castile, Aragon, and Navarre formed an unprecedented alliance, which Pope Innocent III declared a crusade. In a massive and bloody battle, the numerically superior Muslim forces of Caliph Muhammad an-Nasir clashed with the united Christian armies. The decisive moment came with the unexpected flanking attack by King Alfonso VIII of Castile and the daring breakthrough by King Sancho VII of Navarre directly to the Caliph's tent. The overwhelming Christian victory definitively broke the military power of the Almohads and opened the gateway for the rapid reconquest (Reconquista) of Andalusia. Today, a modern visitor center located in Santa Elena provides detailed insights into the tactics and the profound impact of this battle on Spanish history.
