Tsavo-East National Park (Kenya)

Weather…

Tsavo East National Park, encompassing 13,747 square kilometers, is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya. Established in April 1948, the park is situated in a semi-arid region formerly known as the Taru Desert. It is separated from its western counterpart by the main road and railway connecting Mombasa and Nairobi. A dominant geographical feature is the Yatta Plateau, which represents the world's longest lava flow, stretching approximately 290 kilometers along the park's northern boundary. The Galana River flows through the arid landscape, creating the Lugard Falls, a series of white-water rapids carved into ancient rock. Tsavo East is renowned for its 'red elephants,' a color acquired from dust-bathing in the park's iron-rich volcanic soil. The vegetation is primarily bushy grassland and open savannah, providing excellent visibility for spotting lions, leopards, and large herds of Cape buffalo.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The prime wildlife viewing season in Tsavo East runs during the dry months from June to October, as animals concentrate near permanent water sources. The short dry spell in January and February also provides excellent opportunities to spot the famous red elephants and predators.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are the most productive times for game drives, as wildlife is most active during cooler hours. Midday heat forces many animals into shade, so plan your drives to start at dawn or end at dusk for best sightings.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must remain inside their vehicles at all times and maintain a safe distance from wildlife, especially predators. Feeding animals is strictly prohibited, as it disrupts their natural behaviour and can be dangerous for both visitors and animals.
🎒
What to bring
Bring a good pair of binoculars for spotting distant animals and a camera with a zoom lens. Lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sturdy walking shoes, and sun protection are recommended for comfort.
🧭
Getting there
Tsavo East is easily reached via the Voi gate from Nairobi (about 5 hours by road) or from the Mombasa highway. Several airstrips inside the park serve chartered flights from Nairobi or coastal resorts, making access flexible.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife sightings can be unpredictable, so be prepared to spend several hours driving before encountering major animals. Patience is essential; the quiet intervals often reveal smaller creatures, birds, and memorable landscapes that make the wait worthwhile.
