Yatta Plateau (Kenya)

Weather…

The Yatta Plateau in eastern Kenya is one of the world's most remarkable geological formations, recognized as the longest individual lava flow on Earth. Stretching for approximately 290 kilometers, it forms a narrow, flat-topped ridge that runs parallel to the Athi River. Created about 13 million years ago during the Miocene epoch by an eruption from Ol Doinyo Sabuk, the plateau consists primarily of phonolite lava that protected the underlying softer rocks from erosion. This relief inversion caused what was once a valley floor to now stand as a prominent high plateau above the surrounding landscape. The surface of the plateau is largely level and covered by acacia scrub and grasslands, providing habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. For local communities and wildlife, the plateau serves as a significant barrier and a navigational landmark within the Tsavo region. Scientifically, it is a prime example of the longevity of volcanic formations and the dynamics of landscape evolution in East Africa.
